Heineken 0.0 Beer Review

As part of our mission to review as many non-alcoholic drinks as possible, we sometimes have to drink the drinks we don’t necessarily want to.

This Heineken 0.0 is just one of the non-alcoholic lagers that we don’t expect big things of, but it is important that the ‘generic’ or ‘mainstream’ lagers taste good, as for many people it might be their first opportunity at trying a non-alcoholic lager due to its popularity in restaurant and bar chains.

When picking a mainstream, alcoholic lager in the past, Heineken has been one of my go-to drinks. So let’s hope it somewhat resembles that experience!

Heineken Alcohol Free Initial Review

At first glance of this Heineken 0.0, it looks very familiar – similar to the ‘proper’ stuff, but of course the branding has been changed to blue to indicate the alcohol free element. The bottle I am trying is from a multipack, which also comes with additional blue branded card wrapped around it.

Opening the cap and taking a sniff, this drink is definitely the closest to smelling like the alcoholic version. It smells almost identical, maybe a bit more malty if I am really paying attention. But on a blind sniff test, I am not sure I would be able to tell whether it has alcohol or not – impressive start!

Once poured into a glass, it looks exactly the same as a real Heineken – another factor I would not be able to tell the difference on if someone were to blind test me.

First swig of this, and again I am incredibly impressed. It is full flavoured, has a great mouthfeel and really does taste like a Heineken, but just like the aroma, maybe a bit more of the malt than usual towards the end.

However, working through this beer, it gets slightly less enjoyable with each sip.

It almost feels like it transforms into one of the lesser quality non-alcoholic lagers out there, and not the great replica that it initially tasted like.

I’m afraid it started off so well, but gradually fades into adequacy, then into disappointment.

Overall Thoughts of Heineken 0.0

My expectations of Heineken 0.0 were not particularly high, and was fully prepared to try a sub-standard non-alcoholic version of an average lager.

My immediate thoughts were that Heineken 0.0 was incredibly impressive; an aroma and taste that was significantly similar to the original.

Unfortunately, my impressions dwindled, as the flavour of the drink changed as I drank it, becoming more of the mediocre beer I expected.

Compared to some non-alcoholic versions of popular lagers, this is probably the best I have tried so far. As it is reasonably easy to get hold of, and reasonably priced, it is definitely worth trying if you like your generic lagers.

If you like craft beer or something else, unsurprisingly, you might wish to give this a miss.
