There was a time in the mid-2000s where cider shot up in popularity with young drinkers.

This started with pear cider, which gradually evolved into fruit ciders; available from loads of brands with just about every fruit combination you can imagine!

The next evolution in fruit ciders now sees them becoming available as alcohol free alternatives. We’ve previously reviewed Kopparberg’s attempts at non-alcoholic fruit ciders (spoiler, we weren’t fans), but in this review, we check out New Zealand-based Old Mout Cider’s attempt!

Old Mout Berries & Cherries Initial Review

Although I’m not much of a cider drinker, I’ve also enjoyed the simple design of Old Mout branding. This bottle looks just like the alcoholic cider, with that touch of blue that has become renowned for low alcohol.

There are two things that I noticed after opening the bottle and pouring myself a glass.

Firstly, the aroma. It smells like a generic fizzy fruit drink that you can buy from any shop across the country.

Secondly, once poured, it looks like sparkling squash. Probably an apple and blackcurrant or summer fruits version.

With that in mind – and flashbacks of my Kopparberg non-alcoholic cider – I took the first taste.

Whilst I imagined it would be sickly sweet, it isn’t. It is definitely sweet, and very much on the borderline of being too much. However, with the long list of fruit juices listed on the label, I am not too surprised by this.

It is definitely close in taste to that of a sparkling fruit drink, but a slightly bitter aftertaste reminds you that this is a cider, albeit without the typical alcohol levels.

This drink definitely shouts out for a hot summers day, and to be served with plenty of ice. It is a good attempt at a fruit cider, but definitely for those of you that have a sweet tooth.

For me, one bottle is enough. And I would need a very hot day, and a very chilled bottle of this to make me want to pick it up again!

Old Mout Berries & Cherries Overall Verdict

The problem I’ve always had with alcoholic fruit ciders – and now non-alcoholic fruit ciders – is that they are so obnoxiously sweet.

Rather than having a cider with “hints of fruit”, you are having an overly sweet, borderline artificial fizzy drink. However, in comparison to Kopparberg’s attempt at a non-alcoholic fruit cider, this is head and shoulders above it. It feels more sophisticated, has a better all-round taste and is just about manageable to drink a whole bottle!Post navigation
